Charles Eugene "Gene" Childress, age 88 of Hope passed away Wednesday, May 17. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Childress; brother Leslie Childress; three children: Laurel McCarter (Mike), Randy Childress (Kate), and Gary Childress (Patti); seven grandchildren: Miranda, Walt, Megan, Wade, Seth, Anna Kate, and Olivia; nine great-grandchildren: Zane, Mayleigh, Weston, Gabriel, Michael, Everett, Isaac, Nathaniel, Parker, and several nieces and nephews.
Gene was born in Mineral Springs on February 20, 1935. He was a graduate of Nashville High School and the University of Arkansas. He spent 38 years with the U.S.D.A. as an engineer and area conservationist. He was a member and deacon of Garrett Memorial Baptist Church. Throughout his life, he organized and served in numerous community and church programs. Gene was a man of gratitude, optimism, faith, and always thankful for his blessings. Nothing pleased him more than to be surrounded by family, friends, animals, and cheering on the Razorbacks.
Visitation will be Friday, May 19, at Brazzel Oakcrest Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be Saturday, May 20, at Shiloh Cemetery in Mineral Springs at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
The family would like to show a special appreciation to the Gentiva Hospice ladies: Keisha, LaTosha, Shelly, and special caregiver Shelonda.
