Mr. Gerald P. Smiley Duke, 71 of Hope passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in Texarkana, Texas. He was born Monday, September 18, 1939 in Hope, Arkansas to Harold and Joyce Garrett Duke. He was one of eight children. He graduated from Hope High School in 1957. Gerald moved to California in 1957 and began his career in the catering business. In 1974 he returned to Hope and started his own catering business which lasted for 37 years. Gerald was very dedicated to his job because he knew that many depended on him for breakfast, lunch and breaks and in all those years never missed one day of work until he had a heart attack in 2009 and as soon as he was able he was back on his route. He is preceded in death by his father, Harold, sister, Camille, two brothers, Jesse and Bruce Duke. Gerald was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Hope and a strong Christian man and loved the Lord. Although he will be terrible missed by his family and many friends we know he is where he wanted to be most of all, with his Lord. Gerald is survived by his loving family which include his wife, Janis, his mother, Joyce Duke of Hope, two daughters, Kimberly Huckabee of Hot Springs and Joan Crowder and husband Garry of Arkadelphia, two step sons; Robert Thornton and Sheila of Perrytown and Jim Thornton and LaDonna of Fouke, Brothers; Winston Duke and wife, Tonna of Dallas, Joe Duke of Hope and Peggy Burson and Walker of Farmerville, LA, Johnny Duke and Linda of Jacksonville, sisters-in-law, Judy and Carolyn Duke of Hope, nine grandchildren; Stephen and Alex Huckabee, Preston Crowder, Stacy (Brian) Callicott, Lea (Chris) Cearley, Justin (Alma) Thornton, Jennifer (Jason) Kisselburg, Ashley (Cody) Langston and Jimmy (Taylor) Thornton; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends, 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, June 17 at Brazzel/Oakcrest The Funeral Home of Hope. Funeral service will be 11:00am on Saturday, June 18 at Brazzel/Oakcrest The Funeral Home.
