Mr. H. Dan Smith, 66, CLU, LUTCF, a past-president of NAIFA-Dallas and NAIFA-Texas passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Dan joined State Farm in 1967, serving the company faithfully for 42 years as both an agent and agency manager. In his first year with State Farm, Dan attended a meeting of the Dallas Association of Life Underwriters (DALU) and became a member that day. Throughout his career, Dan was tireless support of his industry and his professional association, eventually serving as President of DALU (1986-1987) and NAIFA (2004-2005). As one of only two Capitol investors to the NAIFA-Texas PAC, Dan led by example. He gave of his time and talents to promote the PAC and to build up its leadership at the local, state and national levels through his service as a Regional Vice Chair for National IFAPAC. Dan was honored with the National Quality Award more than 15 times. In 1985, he was named the NAIFA-Dallas Life Underwriter of the Year. In 2008, he was recognized by NAIFA-Texas for his extraordinary contributions to political advocacy, receiving the Bruce Murray Tall Texan Award, established by NAIFA-Great Southwest. His civic activities included The Oak Cliff Jaycees and Optimist International. A long time member of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, Dan served as President for the 1999-2000 year. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife,(of 46 years) Liz; daughter, Terri Reynolds and son-in-law, Vernon Reynolds, McKinney, TX and sister-in-law, Charlotte Hood, Emmet, AR. Graveside services are 2:00 PM Saturday, April 11, 2009 in Snell Cemetery in Emmet, Arkansas with Rev. Jerry G. Westmoreland officiating.
