Obituary

Mr. Leavel Gibson, age 68, of Prescott, Arkansas, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. Gibson was born in Gould, Arkansas on June 1, 1942, as the sixth of eight siblings. He attended Rankin Chapel Elementary School, Gould Elementary School, and graduated third in his class from Reed High School in Dumas, Arkansas in 1961. He entered Arkansas AM&N College (now UAPB) in 1961, where he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the AM&N Chorale Society, and numerous other campus organizations. Upon graduating with a degree in Agricultural Education, he was hired by the Clarendon School District as Carver High School's Vocational/Agricultural teacher. He also taught eighth grade American History, Mechanical Art, and Adult Education. Leavel furthered his studies at Crowleys Ridge Vo-Tech in Forrest City, AR, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Leavel taught school in Clarendon until 1970. He was later employed by the USDA/FHA and trained in Helena, Forrest City, and Hope, Arkansas. He also held the position of County Supervisor in Nevada County, and then went full circle back to Hope as the Hempstead County Supervisor. In 1990 Leavel was promoted to Assistant District Director in the Hope Area Office and then served as Specialist for Area Five, which is headquartered in Hope. Leavel was extremely active with his church, New Testament House of Prayer, as well as various other civic and community groups in Hope and Prescott, including Boys To Men, Single Parent Scholarship Committee, Southwest Arkansas Development Council Youth Board, and C.O.P.E. in Hope, AR. In addition to spending time with Jared, he loved to garden, work in his shop and, most of all, go FISHING!!! He was preceded in death by his parents, Earmer Lee and Croma Maxwell Gibson, two brothers, Earnest Gibson of Gould, AR and Eddie Gibson of Richmond, TX, and two sisters, Arthenia Allen of Milwaukee, WI, and Rozenia Ivory of Star City, AR. He is Survived by his wife of 44 years, Joyce Holden Gibson. Two daughters: Regina Leavel Gibson and Teri Gibson Todd (Jerald) of Little Rock, AR. His "main man" and special fishing, farming, and gardening buddy -- grandson Jared Holden Todd. Two brothers: Xavier Dean Gibson and Ira, Toney, AL and Calvin Gibson, Dumas, AR. One sister Jerilean Roberts, Allentown, NJ. And numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Munn's Chapel Baptist Church in Prescott, Arkansas. Graveside Services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Star City, Arkansas. Arrangement by Brazzel/Cornish The Funeral Home, Prescott, Arkansas. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brazzel Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott, Arkansas.
