Obituary

Mrs. Ruth Marie Bumpurs, 89, of Washington, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Heather Manor Nursing and Rehab, Hope, Arkansas. She was born in Grandfield, Oklahoma on March 4, 1919, to Richard Leighton and Rose Marie Redway Mundt. Raised in Wichita Falls, Texas until a teenager, she graduated from high school in Big Spring, Texas. Ruth moved to the Hope/Washington area in 1965 to help care for her husband, Cecil Bumpurs parents. Although she knew no one when she arrived, she quickly made many friends. Because of those friends, her life here was full of joy and happiness. She started a Friday night group that met at each others homes for many years for cards and conversation. In July 1973, Ruth became one of the first tour guides at the newly established and developing Old Washington Historic State Park and enjoyed working there through the early 80's. After the death of her husband, she was encouraged to leave Hope to live near her children. However, the strong bond she felt with her extended family here held her in Hope. She was a longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church, Hope, Ark. and a member of D.A.R. Ruth lived at the Hope Haven Retirement Home for the past two years and enjoyed many visits from friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Cecil Bumpurs, who died in 2001; by one sister, Edna Janice Williams; and by daughter-in-law, JoAnne Sloan. HER SURVIVORS INCLUDE: Two Sons: Dwight Sloan, Fort Worth, Texas. Kenneth Sloan and Sharon, Foresthill, Calif. One Daughter: Janice Stallman, Davis, Calif. Three Granddaughters; Kristie Palamar and Tim, Carlsbad, Calif. Karen Ferguson and Reagan, Burleson, Texas. Cynthia Stallman Bonin, Davis, Calif. And Five Great-Grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. FUNERAL SERVICE will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2009, Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home Chapel, Hope, Arkansas, with Rev. Neal Ridling officiating. Burial follows in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Hope, AR. Arrangements by BRAZZEL/Oakcrest Funeral Home, Hope, Ark.
